UNICEF Calls All Parties To Stop Humanitarian Crisis’ Causes In Yemen

July 19th, UNICEF renewed its call for all parties to stop all the causes of the humanitarian crisis in Yemen .

Mohammed al – Asadi said in a press briefing  held by the organization to publicize the activities and programs implemented during the first half of this year ” the organization is working with international and local partners in order to keep the national structure  on their  education and health activities.”

“The organization is currently working with its partners to activate the social security fund , which serves about eight million citizens,” he added.

The officials of various sectors in the UNICEF reviewed their plans and achievement of their programs in all sectors during the first half of this year.

Rasha al-Arthy, nutrition specialist in UNICEF organization, pointed out that there are more than 1.5 million children in  general malnutrition,  370 thousand of them in severe acute malnutrition, “UNICEF treated 103 thousand of those  children until June 2016.”

Al-Arthy also explained that UNICEF is targeting the most ten food insecurity affected provinces which are  Hodeida – Hajja – lahij  – al-Byida’a  – Aden – Sa’ada – Taiz – Dali’e – Shabwa –and Abyan.

She noted that the health services’ aim is to encourage breastfeeding and  train local volunteers to raise mother awareness to provide treatment , health services and children nutrition.

There are 2,848 heath centers  to provide free medical services and the number of the health centers increased to more than 1,300 health center from 2015, according to al-Arthy.

Al-Arthy also reported that a quarter of health facilities in Yemen had been closed since  the  Yemen crisis; UNICEF has worked to reopen them again.

Nadia Al Harthy, water and environmental sanitation specialist in UNICEF, said that water and environmental sanitation program targeted around four million people during the first half of this year in different Yemeni provinces, such as  Taiz, Sa’ada, Lahj, Dali’e, Sana’a.

She explained that the water supply reached some areas, especially Sana’a and Taiz and about 64 thousand people in Sana’a and Taiz took the benefit from the water supply . she added that  124 thousand healthy personal hygiene bags have been distributed in the governorates of Al – Jawf, Amran, Sa’ada, Hajjah, Socotra, and Taiz.

Harthy confirmed that the UNICEF undertook to run the waterworks and sanitation, provide  fuel to number of provinces, benefiting about three million and 800 thousand people.

In the education sector , education Specialist at the UNICEF , Dr. Eftikhar Shami explained that schools have been affected by the conflict, ” more than 200 schools damaged in Sana’a. UNICEF worked on  the restoration , rehabilitation and construction for more than 59 schools in 18 provinces, and provide its support to the testing process in the primary and secondary public testimony for about 600 students.

Amal Al-Ashdal,  the social protection specialist, noted that about 7,500 families in Taiz and 5,000 families in Sana’a got a  benefit from the social protection, “the project aim to target another 5,000 new cases in Taiz during the coming period .

Child protection sector in the UNICEF  has provided the  children protection services for a 1,3000, and benefited more than 125,000 children by providing them birth certificates. The sector also taught about 800 thousand people by the danger of mines and ballistics non – explosive risks.
