On Thursday a U.K. peace activist attempted a citizen’s arrest of General Ahmad Al-Asiri for war crimes in Saudi Arabia’s ongoing invasion of Yemen
In a statement after the attempt, Walton explained the charges behind the arrest.
“Ahmad Al-Asiri is a major general in the Saudi armed forces where he is the chief apologist for the war crimes in Yemen. He represents a regime that has killed thousands in Yemen and shown a total contempt for international law,” he said. “He shouldn’t be welcomed and treated like a dignitary. He should be arrested and investigated for war crimes.
For over two years Saudi Arabia has perpetrated a brutal U.S.-backed war on the tiny Middle Eastern country in an attempt to reinstall the deposed President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi, largely seen as a puppet of the Wahabbi dictatorship.
U.N. monitors have accused the Saudi coalition of war crimes, noting that Saudi forces have targeted aid convoys, willfully disregarding civilian casualties.
The relentless Saudi campaign, heavily backed by the U.S. and U.K. governments, has killed over 10,000 civilians and caused a famine which risks the lives of almost 18 million Yemenis.
“The U.K. government has blood on its hands and we need to do everything we can to stop the transfer of weapons and show these sales are illegitimate. By providing weapons and support Britain is deeply complicit in Saudi war-crimes, and it’s vital that we bring an end to this immoral, abhorrent trade,” said Walton and Reverend Daniel Woodhouse in a statement released after the action.
The U.K. government has already approved US$4.1 billion worth of arms sales to Saudi Arabia, something that the Campaign Against the Arms Trade says is a direct violation of British guidelines on arms sales.
