The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said on Thursday it had treated more than 45,000 people with cholera in nearly two months.
“It has treated 45,700 people since 9 May to 4 July in response to the disease,” the report said.
“The committee supported 18 health facilities in 12 Yemeni governorates (out of 22) to treat cases of severe cholera,” the report said.
The ICRC added in the report that it “provided more than 180,000 intravenous fluids, 250,000 aerosol solutions, antibiotics for severe cases, pregnant women and children” and “distributed more than 225,000 chlorine tablets to 12 health facilities and water distribution stations.”
“As part of the ICRC’s response to cholera, some 363,000 people benefited from awareness-raising sessions in Sana’a and several other provinces,” the report said.
In addition, 75 volunteers from the Yemeni Red Crescent Society in the governorates of Lahj, Dali and Dhamar were trained to raise awareness about the cholera epidemic in order to carry out awareness sessions in their respective governorates.
“Of every 90 Yemenis, more than one is suspected of contracting the disease,” the report said. “Since May 15, an average of 28 people a day has died of cholera, with the death rate of people over the age of 60 accounting for about 30 percent of the total number of deaths due to the deterioration of their health,” he said.
Six thousand suspected cholera cases were reported on a daily basis during the past week, while severe and severe cases accounted for approximately 40% of all cases treated.
The report said 1802 Yemenis died from the disease, from 27 April to 16 July, with more than 356,000 suspected cases of the disease.
