UN Secretary-General : War in Yemen Caused Millions Of People Suffering

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterich, said that the worldwide conflict spread terror and suffering for millions of women, men, girls and boys .

“Last year, the United Nations recorded the death and injury of more than 26,000 civilians in only six countries affected by the conflict: Afghanistan, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Iraq, Somalia and Yemen,” Guterich said .

He pointed out that the bombing of towns and cities in Yemen and Syria kills and injures tens of thousands of civilians every year and destroys homes and vital infrastructure, including water and energy networks .

He added that the war in Yemen has caused millions of people suffering because of lack of food .

Antonio Guterich urged members of the Security Council not to allow political differences to prevent or undermine measures to protect civilians .

The United Nations Secretary-General reminded members of the Security Council of the campaign launched last year by the United Nations under the slogan “Civilians are not targets .”
