Oxfam International warned  that an upsurge in fighting around the city of Hodeidah in western Yemen threatens to cut vital supplies to millions of people who are only one step away from starvation .

“Yemen is already in the worst humanitarian crisis in the world and is steadily descending into famine,” Oxfam Country Director Mohsen Siddiqui said in a statement posted on the website .

“If this vital path to food, fuel and medicine is cut, the result will be more hunger, more people who lack health care and more families burying their loved ones” he said .

There has been a lot of destruction, disease and death”” Siddiqui added . He pointed out that the international community is needed to press the warring parties to end the fighting and return to peace negotiations .

Fighting in Hodeidah province has already forced hundreds of families to leave their homes .

The port of Hodeidah is one of the country’s main ports serving the basic needs of millions of people.
