UNFPA expressed its concern that 1,000 pregnant women may be at risk of death as a result of the lack of access to Al -Thawra Hospital in Hodeidah Governorate.
“There are about 1,500 people who are likely to have complications related to pregnancy and childbirth and may be in danger of dying because of the lack of access to Al-Thawra Hospital,” said Dr. Luay Shabaneh director of the Arab Region Fund.
Dr. Luay Shabaneh pointed out in a statement received by the Yemeni news agency (SABA ) that Al-Thawra hospital is the only hospital in Hodeidah able to provide emergency services .
He pointed out that many of the medical facilities in the city of Hodeidah were closed while the rest of the facilities operate with the lowest capacity, which places great pressure on Al Thawra Hospital as the main care center for children and their mothers in the governorate.
The statement stressed that UNFPA is committed to support the Yemeni people and work to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe in Yemen.
He called on all parties of the conflict to respect their legal obligations under international humanitarian law to ensure protection of health workers, patients, health facilities and communities, and to facilitate humanitarian access to areas where people are increasingly in need of assistance.
