German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s government will extend the moratorium on arms exports to Saudi Arabia, a government source said on Monday.
The source attributed this move to the war in Yemen and the Social Democrats’ sticking to their position refusing to lift the suspension; according to Reuters news agency.
Conservatives led by Merkel and their partners from tge Social Democratic party have agreed to stop arms exports to countries involved in the Yemen conflict.
The Berlin-based Greenpeace organisation has appealed to the German government not to end the arms embargo, which expires at the end of this month.
In November 2018, Germany issued a decision to halt arms exports to Saudi Arabia, following the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi at his country’s consulate in Istanbul.
