The United Nations has confirmed that the security chaos in the southern Yemeni provinces has become “a source of concern for humanitarian workers.”

In her briefing to the Security Council Tuesday on the humanitarian situation in Yemen, the Deputy Director of Operations for the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, Ghada Mudawi, said that “insecurity is a concern for workers, as attempts to steal cars, kidnappings and other attacks are increasing,” indicating that “the office is sometimes forced to suspend its works.”

Mudawi called on the government loyal to the Saudi-led coalition in Aden to immediately release its five employees who have been kidnapped in Abyan province since last February, in addition to two it claimed were detained in Sana’a.

A number of workers in international organisations were subjected to interruptions, kidnapping and looting of their vehicles in most of the districts of Abyan, in addition to areas in Dhalea province and Tor Al-Baha area in Lahj province, which are all under the control of the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council militia.
