Unidentified gunmen assassinated on Monday a prominent security official in the city of Taiz, southwestern Yemen, media sources reported.

The sources stated that unidentified gunmen shot Brigadier General Abdullah Al-Qaisi, the former advisor to the Director of Taiz Security and an academic at Taiz University, while he was leaving his house at dawn today in Al-Jamhouri neighborhood, killing him instantly.

The reasons and motives for the assassination, or the party responsible for it, are not yet known, according to the sources.

The assassination comes in the context of the collapse of the security situation in the city, which is witnessing widespread liquidations, amid the escalation of conflicts between the Islah Party and the UAE-backed factions led by Tariq Saleh.
