The Minister of Transport, Abdulwahhab Al-Durra, met on Sunday in Hodeidah port with Director of the Office of the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations to Yemen, ‘Roxane Bazargan’.
The meeting, which included the CEO of the Red Sea Ports Corporation, Captain Muhammad Ishaq, and his deputy, Zaid Al-Washli, discussed aspects related to the progress of work in the port of Hodeida, in conjunction with the arrival of several ships to its berths.
During the meeting, Al-Durra reviewed the importance of Hodeidah port that serves more than 70 percent of the Yemeni people due to its important geographical location and its mediation of densely populated areas, indicating that several ships loaded with goods and containers arrived yesterday.
The Minister of Transport confirmed the need of the port at the current stage for bridge cranes as a substitute for the cranes that were targeted by the aggression coalition.
He touched on a number of operational requirements for the ports of Hodeida that had previously been identified by the team of experts brought in by the UNDP to assess the ports of “Hodeida, Saleef and Ras Issa” during the year 2019.
In turn, the Director of the Office of the UN Envoy appreciated the efforts made to facilitate the arrival of ships loaded with goods, confirming that the United Nations is well aware of the importance of the port of Hodeida for the population density in the nearby regions and provinces.
She emphasized the importance of aid ships arriving at this vital facility, promising to follow up the issue of providing bridge cranes.
The Minister of Transport, the UN official and her entourage had visited the container terminal in the port of Hodeida, and listened to an explanation from the CEO of the Red Sea Ports Corporation about the mechanism of work in the terminal with the alternative equipment in the container ships.
