The Yemeni Media Union (YMU) condemned X platform, formerly known as Twitter, for shutting down an account belonging to the Yemeni news agency, Saba.

“What the management of the (X) platform has done is an arbitrary measure against the most prominent Yemeni media outlet, and it is a dangerous development that threatens freedom of opinion and expression at the Arab and international level, as all international conventions guarantee the protection of media institutions and media professionals from all kinds of violations, including closure and muzzling,” the YMU said in a statement issued on Sunday.

The statement considered this measure an attempt to muzzle the voices of Yemeni media professionals and prevent them from communicating their grievances to the world through various social media platforms.

The YMU expressed regret for the slide of the (X) platform into this dangerous slope that threatens its credibility in front of its audience.

“This arbitrary measure against the Yemeni news agency Saba comes within the framework of the steps of the US-Saudi aggression coalition that has targeted the Yemeni media since March 26, 2015 by closing and blocking, and yet by bombing and destruction. Not only that but also closing the pages of activists, media professionals and media institutions on social media platforms Facebook, YouTube and X,” the statement read.

The YMU voiced its full solidarity with the Yemeni news agency Saba and called on media professionals, journalists and human rights defenders, individuals and institutions in various countries of the world to show solidarity with the Yemeni media, condemn these companies and pressure them to reverse their arbitrary, illegal and immoral measures.
