A recent UN report stated that more than 16 million people in Yemen affected by the nine-year conflict and natural disasters are in need of protection services during the current year 2024.
According to the overview report on humanitarian needs in Yemen, issued by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), 16.4 million people from the most vulnerable groups in the country will need protection services during the current year 2024.
The report added that those in need of protection services are among the most vulnerable groups, which include: displaced persons; Including those at risk of eviction, individuals without access to civil documents, families headed by women and children, unaccompanied and separated children, persons with disabilities, and minority groups; Including marginalized people, refugees, asylum seekers and migrants.
The OCHA office explained that civilians in Yemen are still exposed to protection risks resulting from the impact of nine years of conflict and the long-term consequences of the crisis, especially children and women, as 45% of people in need of various protection services this year are children. There are 7.3 million children, in addition to 6.3 million women and girls, or 38% of the total number of people in need of protection this year.
According to this year’s humanitarian response plan, the Protection Cluster, consisting of 66 partners, requires funding of $168.1 million to reach 4.6 million people in need of specialized protection responses, including 2.5 million children and 1.3 million women and girls, through Providing protection, community engagement and legal assistance services, implementing gender-based violence protection programmes, strengthening national protection systems, supporting recovery from violations, helping to manage conflict-related psychosocial trauma and providing livelihoods and skills building.
