Angry demonstrators stormed the headquarters of the local authority in the Yemeni province of Socotra and demanded the departure of the pro-Emirati governor of the province, Raafat Al-Thaqli.
The demonstrators denounced the deteriorating living conditions in the archipelago and blocked a number of roads leading to the local authority headquarters before storming it.
The protesters chanted slogans demanding the departure of the governor of Socotra, who is loyal to the Emirates. They accused him of corruption and plundering revenues, and held him responsible for the deterioration of service conditions in Socotra.
The UAE has great influence over the Yemeni archipelago of the Socotra Islands, located in the Indian Ocean, and runs the island through its loyalists in the local authority and the military and security forces.
The UAE authorities operate flights to the island, and also work to grant the people of the island Emirati citizenship.
