Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi’s helicopter had an “emergency landing” accident in the northwest of the country on Sunday, Iranian news reported.

The news agency pointed out that the harsh weather conditions and dense fog made the mission of rescue teams difficult.

The agency said that “16 rescue teams were sent to the area, but due to unfavorable weather conditions, the search and rescue operation will take some time.”

According to IRNA news agency, Raisi had traveled to the East Azerbaijan Province on Sunday morning to open the joint Qizqalasi dam on the Aras river at the border with Azerbaijan.

The status of the president is unknown as of yet.
