The General Organization for the Preservation of the Historic Cities in Sana’a, issued an urgent appeal to local and international organizations concerned with cultural heritage protection.

The authority called for immediate cooperation to save historical cities from the effects of heavy rainfall, with a particular focus on those listed on the World Heritage List, such as Old Sana’a and Zabid.

According to a statement obtained by Yemen News Agency Saba, the current climatic conditions in Yemen have significantly impacted historical cities.

In Old Sana’a alone, there have been 100 reports of historic buildings at risk of collapse, and recently, one of the palaces collapsed in the Bustan al-Sultan neighborhood.

The authority urged both local and international organizations concerned with cultural heritage to provide urgent support to address these climatic changes, as well as to support temporary safeguarding measures and permanent restoration projects.

It also called on all relevant parties to provide emergency assistance to field teams for reinforcing and securing buildings in Sana’a, Zabid, Thula, Jibla, and other affected historical cities.

The authority warned of potential risks to several archaeological sites if serious efforts are not made to rescue these sites from further collapse.
