United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said on Thursday, August 1, that about 4,500,000 displaced people in Yemen are at risk of hunger, four times more than the rest of Yemen’s population, 80% of whom live below the poverty line.
It said in a statement published on its official website that many Yemenis are forced daily to give up their food in order to feed their children.
Recently, the relief aid provided by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, which was provided to the displaced during the past years, declined due to the decline in funding for humanitarian plans, and the emergence of new hotspots of conflict in Sudan, Palestine, and Ukraine, which cast a shadow over the humanitarian situation in Yemen.
In its statement, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees pointed out the damage to the camps for the displaced as a result of the recent rains.
It stated that more than 1,300 shelters for displaced people were completely or partially destroyed as a result of heavy rains and hailstorms that caused floods in several areas in Yemen.
According to UNHCR, thousands of displaced people who lost their homes need urgent support, after losing their possessions of clothing, food, mattresses, etc., in addition to the damage and destruction of water and sanitation facilities.
The Commission reported that its team in Yemen seeks to provide relief and shelter to the affected families who have completely lost their homes.
