Protesters close exchange shops in Abyan in protest of currency deterioration

Popular unrest escalated in Abyan Governorate, southern Yemen, on Wednesday, coinciding with the worsening suffering and deterioration of citizens’ living conditions.

Today, protesting citizens closed a number of exchange shops in the city of Lawdar, north of the governorate, in protest against what they described as currency manipulation by money changers.

This comes amid a historic collapse of the local currency in areas controlled by the pro-coalition government, where the exchange rate reached about 2,000 Yemeni riyals to the dollar.
