A consultative workshop titled “Integrating Persons with Disabilities in the Humanitarian Response Plans of Local and International Donors” was held at the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor, as part of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
At the opening, Assistant Undersecretary of the Ministry of Social Affairs for the Social Welfare Sector, Yasser Sharafuddin, emphasized the keenness of the ministry’s leadership to cooperate with donors to play their role in the humanitarian response to the needs of vulnerable groups, especially people with disabilities.
He pointed out the importance of the workshop in identifying the projects needed by the disabled and including them in the response plans, especially in light of the current circumstances and the increase in their numbers according to studies. He pointed out the need for follow-up and evaluation of these projects in order to achieve the desired goals in serving this segment.
For his part, the Undersecretary of the Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ministry for the International Cooperation Sector, Ismail Al-Mutawakel, renewed the ministry’s commitment to people with disabilities.
He emphasized the need for concerted efforts between official and community organizations to provide the necessary support for the disabled.
The workshop came up with a number of recommendations, which emphasized the need to integrate people with disabilities into humanitarian response plans and programs funded by local and international donors to ensure that their special needs are met and that social justice is achieved.
It recommended granting people with disabilities a share of not less than 15 percent of interventions, grants and targeted assistance, based on the proportions of disability in Yemeni society, and strengthening cooperation with the executive authorities in conducting a comprehensive field survey in the Republic of Yemen.
