Heavy rain fell last night and early Monday on various areas of the Gaza Strip, causing hundreds of tents in displacement camps to become submerged with water.
According to the Palestinian News and Information Agency (Wafa), the displaced, especially in the areas of Deir al-Balah and Mawasi Khan Yunis, south of the Gaza Strip, spent a harsh night inside their tents, which were swallowed by rainwater and blown by the winds.
The catastrophic humanitarian conditions have forced about two million displaced people since October 7, 2023, to live in worn-out tents that lack the minimum necessities for a decent life and do not protect against the cold of winter or harsh frost waves after the Israeli occupation forces destroyed their homes.
On Sunday, medical sources announced the death of an infant in the Gaza Strip due to the cold and low temperatures. He is the fifth infant to die as a result of the cold and lack of heating within less than a week.
The Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, reported on Saturday that children in Gaza are freezing to death due to the cold weather and the lack of shelter.
Lazzarini stated that “blankets, mattresses, and many winter supplies have been stuck in the area for months, awaiting approval to enter Gaza.”
