The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Jamal Ahmed Amer, met with the Director of the Office of the Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General to Yemen, Mr. Mohammed Al-Ghannam and the Economic Advisor of the UN Envoy’s Office, Dirk-Jan Omtzigt.
During the meeting, Minister Amer received a briefing from the economic advisor of the UN Envoy’s office on the results of his meetings with several officials responsible for the economic file in Sana’a, as well as the constructive discussions aimed at moving beyond wishes and talks to take practical, agreed-upon steps.
Minister Amer emphasized that the proper approach to addressing the economic file is to establish agreed-upon parameters and criteria for the Joint Economic Committee’s work, identify points of disagreement, and focus on areas of convergence, ensuring that the committee’s outputs align with the aspirations of the Yemeni people
He explained that Sana’a’s position is clear and unambiguous about its immediate readiness to sign the roadmap as the entry point to start the political settlement process in Yemen.
“’Any talk that the roadmap is currently frozen is a response to U.S. pressure on Sana’a to halt its support for Gaza, which is completely rejected. There is no connection between the peace process, the signing of the roadmap, and the escalation in the Red Sea. Any pressure in this regard will be counterproductive,” he said.
He added that Sana’a’s position remains clear and firm regarding its immediate readiness to sign the roadmap
For his part, the Director of the Office of the Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General to Yemen in Sanaa, Al-Ghannam, explained that the roadmap is the agreed upon channel to move forward with the peace process in Yemen.
The senior economic advisor in the UN envoy’s office said the discussions he had in Sanaa were positive.
