The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) statistics indicated that the number of refugees worldwide exceeded 122 million people in 2024, which is more than their number last year.
A statement by Peter Rundstrut-Bauer, the country director of the commission in Germany, said that “the numbers are shocking, but behind every number there is a human being who hopes for safety and a future. Our common duty is to provide protection and future prospects for these people.”
According to the annual report of the German partner of the commission, the number of refugees worldwide was 117.4 million people in 2023.
The increase in numbers is primarily due to many people fleeing Sudan due to the civil war.
The statement pointed out that more than 11.8 million people have been forced to flee since the escalation of violence in April 2023.
The statement added that the situations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Myanmar also contributed to the increase in the number of refugees.
The statement said that the conflict in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon has led to the forced displacement of more than 1.7 million people.
