The stations of the Earthquake and Volcano Monitoring and Study Center recorded an earthquake in Al Mahwit Governorate.
The head of the Earthquake and Volcano Monitoring and Study Center in Dhamar Governorate, Eng. Mohammed Hussein Al-Houthi, explained that the monitoring stations recorded a light tremor measuring 2.2 on the Richter scale in Al-Tawila District in Al-Mahwit, noting that the tremor was not felt.
Al-Houthi said that “the tremor occurred at 12:45 pm yesterday, Tuesday, where the epicenter was about 25 km northwest of Al-Mahwit.”
Al-Houthi attributed the earthquakes in some Yemeni regions to the effects of Yemen on the Red Sea Rift, the Gulf of Aden, and the Afar Depression in Africa.
He explained that the Yemeni monitoring stations recorded seismic activity in Ethiopia during the previous period, which led to light earthquakes in several areas of Yemen, including Lahj, Yafa, Al-Dhale, Aden, Al-Mokha, and parts of Taiz.
It is noteworthy that the monitoring stations recorded two earthquakes of varying magnitudes during the past week in the Yafa districts of Lahj Governorate, and Hays, south of Hodeidah, in addition to a number of tremors in the east and west of the Gulf of Aden.
