A fire broke out aboard the Hong Kong-flagged container ship, ASL Bauhinia, on 28 January, but it was not related to military activities of Sanaa forces, according to the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden Joint Maritime Information Center (JMIC).

The JMIC stated in its report that the fire outbreak on the Hong Kong-flagged container ship, ASL Bauhinia, on January 28, has “no connection to attacks by Ansarullah.”

After unsuccessful attempts to contain the blaze, the crew was forced to abandon ship and was safely rescued by a nearby vessel, JIMIC added.

It noted that the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, though a maritime security source indicated that it may have been caused by hazardous cargo on board.

The ASL BAUHINIA, a 1,930-TEU vessel built in 2022, was en route from Jebel Ali to Aqaba via the Suez Canal at the time of the incident.

In recent years, there has been a rise in fires on container ships, often linked to flammable materials, Reuters reports.

This incident comes amid expectations of a gradual resumption of shipping services in the region following recent developments in the ceasefire between “Israel” and Hamas.
