An exchange of gunfire occurred between US Border Patrol agents and suspected cartel members near the US-Mexico border, according to US media reports.
The incident, which took place near Fronton Island, happened as individuals attempted to cross the Rio Grande into the United States. No injuries were reported on either side.
US authorities pointed out that no immigrant managed to enter American territory, suggesting that they believe the individuals who opened fire were members of drug cartels.
This comes amid US President Donald Trump’s announcement of measures to ensure border security and reduce the flow of illegal immigrants across the southern border, including the deployment of additional military reinforcements.
In recent days, Mexican authorities prevented a US military plane carrying immigrants from entering its territory.
