Swedish television announced that 38-year-old Salwan Momika was killed after being shot inside an apartment in the Hovsjö area of Södertälje city on Wednesday evening.
Silvan Momika, of Iraqi origin, was known for organizing events to burn copies of the Holy Quran and incite hatred against Muslims.
According to reports, the incident took place late Wednesday evening, when police and medical teams received a report of gunfire inside an apartment building after 11 pm.
Police spokesman Daniel Wickdal reported that a man in his forties was found shot inside an apartment and was taken to hospital.
Sources from SVT Nyheter indicate that the victim is Silvan Momika, who is known for burning copies of the Holy Quran during protests that sparked widespread anger last year.
The Swedish Security Service (Säpo) has also been involved in the investigation due to the sensitive nature of the case.
The incident was reportedly broadcast live on social media, but police have so far refused to confirm the claims.
Police are still cordoning off the crime scene, while special teams are being used to search and investigate the area.
A police spokesman confirmed that a person has been detained for questioning, without providing further details on whether the person is an official suspect.
