Amnesty International called on the United States on Tuesday to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who will meet with US President Donald Trump at the White House this evening.
The organization said in a series of posts on the “X” platform: “By receiving Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court on charges of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity, the United States of America shows contempt for international justice.”
It added: “The administration of former President Joe Biden thwarted any efforts to achieve international justice for Palestine, and President Trump continued on this path by not arresting Netanyahu or subjecting him to US investigations, and here he is receiving him as the first prime minister to visit the White House since the inauguration” on January 20.
The international organization stressed that “the United States has a clear obligation under the Geneva Conventions to search for and extradite persons accused of committing war crimes or ordering their execution.”
It stressed that “there should be no safe haven for individuals alleged to have committed war crimes or crimes against humanity.”
These developments come amid an expected meeting this evening at the White House between Netanyahu and Trump, during which they are expected to discuss several issues, most notably the second phase of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza, and the day after the war in the Strip.
This is Netanyahu’s first foreign visit after the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant against him and former Defense Minister Yoav Galant on November 21, 2024, on charges of “committing war crimes and crimes against humanity against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.”
