The British newspaper “The Observer” called on Europe to learn how to defend itself and Ukraine, and urged participants in the London summit today, Sunday, to take concrete measures to support Ukraine in order to maintain peace on the European continent.
The newspaper added, in an editorial published today, that in light of the current tension between US President Donald Trump and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky, Europe must learn how to defend itself and Ukraine against any aggression.
The newspaper stressed the need for European leaders, including British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, to realize during the London summit that the features of European and global security have changed.
The newspaper said that the first lesson should be to recognize what has been clear since Trump’s inauguration: the United States cannot be relied upon as a security, intelligence or trade partner. Washington’s support for NATO and international security is no longer a given.
The newspaper also stressed the need to take into account the reality facing the world, not the fantasy that some would like to see, stressing that Washington’s abdication of leadership and support for Ukraine requires a rapid and unified European response without caveats.
