A new round of negotiations is expected to begin within the next two days in an effort to reach a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement between Hamas and the Israeli occupation, according to Palestinian media outlets.
The Palestinian Ma’an News Agency reported that a Hamas delegation is expected to arrive in Cairo to discuss a potential ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
Meanwhile, the Qatari-backed channel Al-Araby Al-Jadeed reported that an Israeli delegation has also arrived in the Egyptian capital as a result of US pressure to resume talks with Hamas.
According to the report, ‘the American pressures coincide with the field pressures faced by the Israeli occupation army,’ noting that the delegation met yesterday with the Egyptian mediation team from the General Intelligence Service. The discussion focused on Hamas’s proposal regarding preparations for a comprehensive deal.
A well-informed Egyptian source involved in the mediation efforts led by Cairo between Hamas and the Israeli government told the Qatari channel that an Israeli delegation arrived in the Egyptian capital with the aim of finding a breakthrough to resume the stalled negotiations.
He explained that the delegation arrived on Sunday evening and met yesterday with the Egyptian mediation team from the General Intelligence Service.
According to the source, both sides discussed recent developments in the war, along with the proposal presented by senior Hamas official Khalil al-Hayya, which outlines preparations for a comprehensive agreement to end the war in Gaza.
He added the Israeli delegation specified certain names of hostages to be released, which indicates that the delegation’s visit to Cairo likely came under American pressure. Among other things, they demanded the release of hostages who hold American citizenship.
The source expected a breakthrough in the negotiations in the coming days, pointing to the American pressure to secure the release of the captives.
