The Spanish government announced on Thursday the termination of a €6.8 million ammunition procurement contract with Israeli company IMI Systems, citing “public interest reasons” for the decision.
The government emphasized that Spain has not purchased or sold any weapons from Israeli companies since October 7, 2023, and pledged to maintain this policy indefinitely.
In a significant escalation of its stance, the government confirmed that all pre-existing arms deals with Israeli firms signed before October 7, 2023, will also be canceled—solidifying its refusal to engage in military cooperation with “Israel” following its aggression against Palestinians in Gaza
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called on the international community in late 2024 to halt arms sales to the Israeli occupation.
He also urged European Union member states to respond positively to Spain’s request to suspend the free trade agreement between the EU and Israel, due to the crimes being committed by Israel in Gaza and Lebanon.
It is also worth noting that the Spanish government blocked two ships carrying weapons and military supplies to Israel from docking at its ports in November 2024.
