European Leaders Speak With Trump Ahead Of Putin Call

The leaders of Britain, France, Germany and Italy again pressed the need for sanctions against Russia in a call with US President Donald Trump before his telephone summit with Russia’s President Vladimir Putin, the British prime minister’s office said.

A few hours after the phone call, the Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, reiterated Italy’s support, together with European and Western partners, for President Trump’s efforts for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.

Stressing the importance of an immediate and unconditional ceasefire. This was announced by Palazzo Chigi, regarding the telephone conversation that Meloni had with Trump, together with the leaders of the United Kingdom, France and Germany, respectively the Prime Minister Keir Starmer, President Emmanuel Macron, and the chancellor Friedrich Merz.

Meloni expressed appreciation for the willingness demonstrated once again by Ukraine in favor of dialogue and reiterated the hope that Moscow will seriously engage through direct contacts between Leaders in a negotiation that leads to peace.

US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday his intention to contact Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday, May 19, to discuss the ongoing Ukrainian conflict.
