Kremlin Spokesman: Putin Conversation With Trump To Be Based On Results Of Istanbul Talks

Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov has told the media that a telephone conversation between Russian and US leaders Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump due later in the day will proceed on the basis of the results of the talks in Istanbul.

“The conversation is important, taking into account the negotiations held in Istanbul,” Peskov said. “As for the talks, we [in the Kremlin] have already said everything we could, we underscored the basic points,” he added. “We will now wait for it. We will give the maximum information possible based on the results of the conversation,” he stated.

On 16 May, Russia and Ukraine held talks in Istanbul. Following the meeting, Moscow and Kiev agreed to exchange prisoners of war: 1,000 for 1,000, to present their vision of a possible future cease-fire, spelling it out in detail, as well as to continue the negotiation process. Russia’s chief delegate, presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky, said that the Russian side was satisfied with the result of the meeting. He also said that Ukraine had requested direct talks between the leaders of the states. Russia “took this request into consideration.”
