The UN Security Council will convene closed-door consultations on Monday, May 5, 2025, to discuss rising tensions between India and Pakistan.
The meeting was scheduled after Pakistan, currently a non-permanent member of the 15-nation Council, formally requested an emergency session.
Greece, which holds the Council presidency for May, confirmed the meeting would take place in the afternoon.
In a statement shared on Sunday, Pakistan’s Permanent Mission to the UN stated, “In view of the deteriorating regional environment and rising tensions between India and Pakistan, particularly the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, which presents a serious risk of escalation and poses a threat to both regional and international peace and security, Pakistan has formally requested emergency closed consultations of the United Nations Security Council.”
Tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighboring states have escalated following an attack that took place near the town of Pahalgam, in the Indian-administered part of Kashmir, on April 22. In that incident, gunmen opened fire on tourists in the scenic Betaab Valley, a popular tourist destination.
