Yesterday, Saturday, a popular humanitarian convoy departed from northern Lebanon toward the Rafah land crossing, under the name “The Dignity Convoy,” in a new attempt to break the siege imposed on the Gaza Strip for nearly two years, in parallel with the ongoing Israeli war of extermination on the Strip.
Lebanese citizens, activists, and Palestinian refugees are participating in the convoy, coming from various Lebanese regions, from Akkar to the South and the Bekaa. This non-partisan, grassroots initiative reflects the growing popular momentum in support of Gaza amidst official Arab and international complicity.
This initiative coincides with the “Sumud” convoy, which began its journey from Tunisia on June 9 and reached the city of Sirte in eastern Libya, en route to the Rafah crossing.
This convoy is part of a popular Arab movement to break the siege on Gaza and deliver humanitarian aid. This movement reflects the growing civil and popular movement in the region against the Israeli genocide in Gaza.
Sheikh Yahya Yahya, the convoy’s coordinator, said that the initiative was named the “Dignity Convoy” “because dignity is the value that is missing in this criminal landscape that has been ongoing for twenty months.”
“While two billion Muslims and 250 million Arabs are watching, this means that dignity has been squandered, and that is why we are reminding ourselves of this through this convoy.” The convoy is not affiliated with any political party or organization, but rather represents “an independent effort by Lebanese and Palestinian activists.”
He added: “We are doing our duty, and we believe that our mere departure will appease the people of Gaza, and this is an important part of achieving our goal. Our mission is to open the way for the aid stockpiled at the Egyptian Rafah crossing.
