The European Commission on Wednesday strongly criticized US sanctions on five European figures, including former Commissioner Thierry Breton, linked to tech regulation.
The Commission said it has sought clarifications from Washington and warned it would respond firmly if needed to defend its regulatory independence. It stressed that EU digital rules ensure a fair, non-discriminatory market and uphold freedom of expression.
The move follows US visa bans announced Tuesday, accusing the figures of pressuring US social media platforms. Tensions have risen after Brussels fined Elon Musk’s X for breaching the EU’s Digital Services Act.
