Belgian Defense Minister: Greenland Issue Vital for NATO’s Survival

Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken considered on Sunday that the Greenland issue is vital for the survival of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), following revelations that US President Donald Trump issued directives to US forces to prepare a potential military plan to “invade” Greenland island.

Francken said in statements to the Belgian channel “HLN”: “I am very worried. I was very clear with the American ambassador to Belgium, Bill White, and with the American delegate to NATO, Matthew Witker. The situation is very alarming. Greenland is not Venezuela. This is a vital issue for NATO’s survival, so I strongly urge: do not cross the line,” according to Sputnik agency.

He added: “Let us preserve our unity and carry out with NATO a military operation (in the Greenland region) in order to direct an unequivocal show of force to our enemies.”

Earlier today, Sunday, the British newspaper “Daily Mail” revealed, citing sources, that US President Donald Trump “issued directives to US forces to prepare a potential military plan to invade Greenland island.”

The newspaper stated that Trump “ordered Special Operations Forces leaders to develop a plan to invade Greenland,” noting that a number of senior US military leaders currently oppose this direction, while Trump’s policy advisor, Stephen Miller, is the most prominent supporter of moving forward on this path within the US administration.

In December 2025, Trump had announced the appointment of Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as a special envoy to Greenland, before the latter later confirmed the United States’ intention to make the island part of its territory.
