Danish FM: Trump is unusual person, but United States is bigger than its president

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen described US President Donald Trump on Sunday as an “unusual person,” but added that the United States is “bigger than its president.”

This came during a meeting between the Danish Foreign Minister and his Norwegian counterpart, Espen Barth Eide, in Oslo on Sunday. The Norwegian minister noted that “fundamental principles of international politics are now being called into question,” according to Russia Today.

The Danish minister responded, saying, “We must do everything we can to uphold those principles. The US president is unusual, to use a diplomatic expression, but the United States is bigger than its president alone.”

Commenting on the tariffs Trump announced on Saturday against countries that sent troops to Greenland, including Denmark and Norway, Rasmussen said the situation “has not improved” after this measure.

He added: “It is troubling to receive such a message from the president, especially given that our European allies have taken on a responsibility they previously ignored, according to the president (Trump).” He noted that “this only complicates and complicates the situation.”

It is worth noting that US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday the imposition of a 10% tariff on Denmark, Britain, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Finland, and Sweden due to their stance on Greenland, which opposes Trump’s efforts to annex the island to the United States.

The countries condemned Trump’s move and announced they would coordinate a joint response to the tariffs.

Following his current visit to Norway, the Danish Foreign Minister is scheduled to travel to London, where he will meet with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. He will then proceed to Stockholm to meet with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristershof.

The Greenland issue and Trump’s actions are expected to top the agenda of these discussions among European officials.
