Death toll in train accident in southern Spain has risen to 40

The death toll has risen to 40 in an accident involving two high-speed trains derailing in the Andalusia region of southern Spain.

The Anadolu Agency reported, citing a statement from the Emergency Center of the Autonomous Province of Andalusia, that the death toll in the train accident that occurred on Sunday/Monday night has risen to 40.

The statement added that 41 other people are still currently receiving treatment in hospitals, including 12 in intensive care.

The Emergency Center also announced that 122 people, including 5 children, received first aid immediately after the accident.

Following the accident, the Spanish railway company “Renfe” announced the cancellation of more than 200 trips heading to Andalusia due to the incident.

On the other hand, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said he is closely following the accident involving the two trains and that his government is working in cooperation with other relevant authorities and emergency teams to help passengers.

In a post on the American platform “X”, Sánchez declared three days of national mourning due to the accident.

Local media reported that carriages from a high-speed train traveling from Malaga to the capital Madrid derailed, coinciding with a similar incident on the opposite track involving another train heading to Huelva.

The cause that led to the derailment of the two trains’ carriages is not yet known
