A Palestinian police officer was killed on Monday in an assassination carried out by Israeli agents in the al-Mawasi area of al-Qarara, west of Khan Yunis in southern Gaza, the Palestinian Information Center reported, citing official sources.
The Palestinian Ministry of Interior confirmed the killing of Mahmoud Ahmad al-Astal, 40, head of the investigations department of the Khan Yunis police force, after he was shot in the al-Mawasi area.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the shooting was carried out from a vehicle carrying several Israeli agents. Security services have opened an investigation and are working to track down those responsible, the ministry said.
Eyewitnesses reported that armed men in a car opened fire on al-Astal, killing him at the scene in a targeted assassination.
Israeli special units and local collaborator networks have previously carried out a series of assassinations targeting Palestinian security officers and resistance figures in the Gaza Strip.
The assassination adds to a broader pattern of targeted attacks amid Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza, despite repeated claims of de-escalation.
