Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated on Sunday that US President Donald Trump’s decision to impose additional tariffs on some European countries over the Greenland issue was a “wrong” decision, calling for de-escalation and dialogue.
In remarks to reporters, Meloni indicated that increasing tariffs on countries that choose to contribute to Greenland’s security was a mistake, and that she disagreed with him, according to Anadolu Agency.
She said she understands the importance Trump attaches to Greenland and the Arctic, but believes that the desire of some European countries to send troops to enhance security should be interpreted as an initiative directed against other actors, not against the United States.
She added: “Frankly, I see a problem in understanding and communication on this issue, and therefore dialogue should be restarted and any escalation avoided.”
