He said the move violates the Oslo Accords and the 1996 Hebron Protocol, which grant the municipality legal authority over maintenance and the Islamic Endowments’ religious authority.
Amro noted Israel is exploiting the war’s state of emergency to reduce Palestinian presence through unilateral measures such as architectural changes. He confirmed that Hebron Municipality, together with the Islamic Endowments, has filed a legal appeal and stressed that any Israeli-imposed actions in the mosque are null and will be challenged legally and publicly.
He called for urgent Palestinian and international action to protect the UNESCO-listed site, emphasizing that political, legal, and popular pressure has successfully thwarted Israeli violations in the past.
