The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) confirmed on Tuesday that the war has disrupted solid waste collection services across the Gaza Strip, turning Al-Faras market into an open waste dump.
The UN programme said in a post on the “X” platform, monitored by the Yemeni News Agency (Saba), that the UNDP/Public Assistance Programme in Gaza is working to transport waste to the Abu Jarad area, as part of efforts to safely restore waste collection services.
It clarified that this step aims to reduce health risks and support recovery and economic activity in Gaza City.
The Gaza Strip suffers from the spread of a large number of waste dumps in various areas due to the Zionist enemy’s prevention of transporting the waste of the Strip’s residents to the large official landfills currently located in the so-called “Yellow Line Area” controlled by the enemy’s army.
Previously, the Director of the UNDP Office in the Gaza Strip, Alessandro Marchesich, said, “The scale of the waste problem in Gaza is immense.”
He explained, “We are talking about two million tons of untreated waste throughout Gaza,” adding that “the risks are immense for the environment, the groundwater aquifer from which Gaza draws most of its water, and the health of the population.”
