UNRWA commissioner: Another dark day in Gaza, ceasefire in name only

The Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, stated that the Gaza Strip witnessed “another dark day, with reports indicating 30 people were killed today alone.”

In a post on X platform, monitored by the Yemeni News Agency (Saba), Lazzarini added: “A ceasefire in name only. Another dark day, with reports indicating 30 people were killed today alone.”

He continued: “Nearly 500 people have been killed since the ceasefire began, including more than 100 children, according to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).”

The UN Commissioner concluded: “A ceasefire means that the guns fall silent and make way for efforts to end the war. Enough is enough. The people of Gaza deserve a genuine ceasefire, a long-awaited one.”

Lazzarini’s statement comes as 32 Palestinian civilians have been killed since dawn today in Israeli airstrikes and attacks on several areas in the Gaza Strip, in continued violation of the ceasefire agreement.

With American and European support, the Israeli army has committed genocide, siege, and starvation in the Gaza Strip for over two years, since October 7, 2023. These crimes have resulted in the deaths of 71,769 Palestinian civilians, the majority of whom are children and women, and injuries to 171,483 others to date—a toll that is not yet final, as thousands of victims remain under the rubble and in the streets, inaccessible to rescue and ambulance crews.

The ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip came into effect on October 10, following a two-year-long Zionist war of genocide. However, the Israeli army continues to violate the agreement daily and still prevents the entry of most humanitarian aid into the Strip.
