UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the recent attacks carried out by Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank.
This came in a statement by the Secretary-General’s spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, during a press conference at UN Headquarters in New York last night, in which he addressed developments in the Middle East.
Dujarric said: “I can tell you that the Secretary-General condemns the recent attacks perpetrated by Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank against Palestinians and their property.”
He noted that the escalating attacks have resulted in deaths, injuries, and significant damage, explaining that such attacks sometimes lead to the displacement of entire communities.
Dujarric emphasized that the Secretary-General reiterates his position that Israeli colonies and their associated infrastructure “have no legal validity,” stressing that they constitute a clear violation of international law, including relevant UN resolutions.
He added that Guterres is calling for an immediate de-escalation of the situation, which has reached alarming proportions in the West Bank, a halt to attacks against civilians and their property, and concrete measures to reverse the current trend in the region.
