Danes launched a campaign on Monday to “annex California to Denmark,” in response to US President Donald Trump’s ambitions to acquire Greenland and annex it to the United States.

A Danish website called “Denmarkification,” meaning “to make something Danish,” said in a statement that the campaign aims to buy California from the United States and turn it into Danish territory, in response to Trump’s plan to buy Greenland.

The campaign’s organizer, Xavier Dutoit, told Politico that the project would cost California $1 trillion and “a lifetime supply of Danish pastries,” which “Hollywood will pay for,” and his proposal has already received support from nearly 200,000 people.

The campaign organizers also suggested raising money to buy California through crowd funding, noting that Trump would agree to sell the state because he is “not a big fan of California,” and has repeatedly described it as the most devastated region in the country.

Regarding the reason for choosing to buy California over other states, the campaign website stated that California was chosen for its warm and sunny climate, advanced technology, avocado production, and Disneyland.

US President Donald Trump had previously contacted Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen regarding the issue of buying Greenland, considering that Greenland is one of the two autonomous regions in the Kingdom of Denmark, in addition to the Faroe Islands, and is located 2,900 kilometers from Denmark.

However, the Danish Prime Minister confirmed that the island is not for sale, which was also confirmed by the Danish Foreign Minister.
