Lebanon’s Parliament Speaker: Talks Under Fire ‘Unacceptable’

Lebanese Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri said on Friday that “it is unacceptable to negotiate with Israel under fire,” warning of the possibility of renewed war due to continued Israeli attacks.

This came during Berri’s meeting with a delegation of ambassadors and representatives from the UN Security Council member states at his office in the town of Ain al-Tineh, west of Beirut.

The meeting was attended by the commander of the UN peacekeeping forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL), General Diodato Abagnara, and the UN humanitarian coordinator in Lebanon, Imran Riza, according to a statement from the Speaker’s office.

The statement noted that Berri listened to the positions of the Security Council representatives regarding UN Security Council resolution 1701, emphasizing the importance of the ceasefire agreement in Lebanon.

Speaker Berri warned that the continuation of Israeli attacks would lead to the renewal of the war, which “Israel” fought with Hezbollah for nearly two years.

Berri stated, “It is not permissible and unacceptable to negotiate under fire.”

Lebanese President Michel Aoun had announced in early November that Lebanon was ready to negotiate with Israel to establish a permanent agreement and end violations, but Israel did not respond.
