The Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, said on Thursday that winter is exacerbating the suffering of Gaza Strip residents, the vast majority of whom are forcibly displaced and still living in tents and barely standing buildings.
In a post on “X” platform, monitored by the Yemeni News Agency (Saba), the Commissioner-General added that the sharp drop in temperatures, strong winds, heavy rains, and flooding are worsening the suffering of the people of the Strip.
He continued: “Two years after the war, thousands of people are still missing and are believed to have died under the rubble.”
Lazzarini confirmed that 92% of homes have been damaged or destroyed, while huge quantities of unexploded ordnance still need to be removed.
He stressed the need for international efforts to focus entirely on restoring a decent life for the people of Gaza, respecting their rights, and placing the interests of those in need at the heart of the response.
