Two US officials said Friday that the United States has deployed a navy destroyer off to Yemen to protect waterways by their claims .
Reuters news agency quoted for the two officials who asked not to be named that the USS Cole arrived near Bab al-Mandab Strait off the south-west Yemen, where it will carrie out patrols and escorting ships.
The destroyer is the same warship that suffered heavy damage in an al Qaeda bombing attack in Yemen in 2000 that killed 17 sailors.
