US envoy Amos Hochstein arrived in Beirut on Tuesday morning to discuss the ceasefire agreement between Hezbollah and the Israeli occupation, and he is expected to head to Tel Aviv later, according to Lebanon’s National News Agency.
The Lebanese caretaker Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, stated that Lebanon’s response to the US proposal was positive, although some points require further discussion.
“The key mater for us in the American proposal is the implementation of Resolution 1701; Lebanon is committed to its implementation, and our goal is its implementation in south of Litani,” he stressed, emphasizing the necessity of restoring stability and ending carnage and destruction in south Lebanon.
He said that he hasn’t heard of a condition regarding Israel’s freedom of military movements in Lebanon, adding that this is just speculation, reaffirming his country’s commitment to implementing UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
Ali Hassan Khalil, an aide to Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, said Lebanon had delivered its written response to the US ambassador in Lebanon on Monday, and White House envoy Amos Hochstein was travelling to Beirut to continue talks.
“Lebanon presented its comments on the paper in a positive atmosphere,” Khalil said, declining to give further details. “All the comments that we presented affirm the precise adherence to (UN) Resolution 1701 with all its provisions,” he said.
He was referring to UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended a previous war between Hezbollah and Israel in 2006.
