US Navy announced on Thursday that the aircraft carrier “Harry S. Truman” collided with a commercial ship near Port Said in Egypt, without any injuries or serious damage being recorded.
The US Navy said in an official statement that the accident occurred late Wednesday evening, while the carrier was operating in the area.
It explained that the collision did not endanger the carrier, and no water leaks or damage to the propulsion engines were recorded, which makes the ship in a safe and stable condition after the accident.. according to its claim.
The “Harry S. Truman” carrier is a huge ship with a length of 333 meters and accommodates about 5,000 crew members.
It also contains a flight deck that allows it to accommodate 90 aircraft.
The “Harry S. Truman” is one of 11 aircraft carriers owned by the US Navy, and any damage that leads to one of them being taken out of service would put pressure on the Navy.
Although collisions between US Navy ships are rare, the incident brought to mind previous incidents in the Asia-Pacific region in 2017 that resulted in the deaths of 17 sailors, raising questions about military training and the pace of naval operations.
This was a reason for holding a congressional hearing and firing a number of officers at the time.
