A Yemeni woman and her daughter were killed inside their apartment in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, in a tragic incident, after they came to Egypt for the daughter’s cancer treatment.
Sources within the Yemeni community in Egypt said the victims were from Hodeidah province, adding that an unidentified person broke into their apartment before carrying out the killings and fleeing the scene.
The circumstances of the incident and the identity of the suspect have yet to be established.
According to information circulating within the community, the mother had traveled to Cairo with her daughter, who was suffering from cancer, to seek medical treatment. Their medical trip, however, ended with both being killed inside their residence.
Sources raised the possibility of a financial motive, suggesting that money the victims had with them to cover medical expenses may have been the reason they were targeted. However, this theory has not been officially confirmed by Egyptian authorities.
Members of the Yemeni community in Egypt are calling for an expedited investigation and for the circumstances of the killings, the identity of the perpetrator and the motive to be established.
The case has also prompted criticism of the level of follow-up by the Yemeni Embassy, according to community sources, who are calling for diplomatic and legal action to monitor the investigation and ensure that the victims’ family receives its legal rights.
